Q: Does the sharpener come with a carbide cutter?

A: Yes. The Timberline Sharpener comes with 1 carbide cutter (you select the size).

Q: How long will the carbide cutter last?

A: Carbide cutter lifespan is very much based on the user. However, much testing and customer feedback allows us to confidently claim a minimum of 40+ sharpenings. Users may very well exceed twice that number of sharpenings with careful use by not binding the carbide cutter, by always spinning clockwise, and by following the Instructions and reading our Tips and Tricks.  Sharpening multiple old chains with a cutter will also increase wear on the cutter as it is reshaping the teeth to the most efficient cutting hook shape.

It is recommended to sharpen the chain often instead of waiting until it is extremely dull. This will make sharpening even faster with a quick touch up while reducing wear on both the carbide cutter and the chain itself.

Q: Do I need to purchase multiple sharpeners for different saw sizes?

A: No. The Timberline Sharpener comes with 1 carbide cutter (you select the size) but all 5 carbide cutter sizes are interchangeable with the set screw on the handle. Only one sharpener needs to be purchased and then any size cutter can be used with that one sharpening unit.

Q: I previously purchased a sharpener. How do I buy additional carbide cutters?

A: To purchase additional carbide cutters, click on the Order button above (in White).  Then click on Additional Carbide Cutter. Select your cutter size and quantity and click Add to Cart. If you need additional items, click Continue Shopping.

Q: What size carbide cutter do I need?

A:  If you’ve used a hand file in the past, the carbide cutter will be the exact same size.

You can refer to our page on Sizing but if you need some additional help, feel free to call us at 208-405-2020 with your Chainsaw MAKE, MODEL and bar length OR your chain specs and we can help you.

Q: Will the timberline sharpener work with any chain?

A: Yes, well, almost. Any chain that can be sharpened with a round file will be compatible with our sharpener.  The following specialty chains are not currently compatible with the Timberline Sharpener: carbide chains (requiring a diamond bit for sharpening) and ripping/milling chains requiring a 5˚- 15˚ sharpening angle  (our standard angle guides are set at 30˚ and our accessory angle guides provide 25˚ and 35˚).

We are working on a sharpener that will accommodate 5˚- 15˚ sharpening angles for ripping/milling chains. Please check back here as we will update this info when that becomes available.

Q: Does the sharpener do a 10 degree down/tilt angle?

A: The sharpener is set flat at 0˚.

The 10˚ down angle has very minimal effect on cutting performance. Although full chisel chain is recommended to sharpen with a 10˚ down angle, cutting performance is virtually unaffected. Basically, there is slightly less meat to the outer edge of the the top plate.

Q: Does the sharpener have inserts/guides for ripping chains?

A: No. The smallest angle the Timberline Sharpener can accommodate is 25 degrees. Ripping/milling chains often require a 10 degree angle, which is not compatible with our current model and would require a new housing or sharpener body. We are working on a sharpener that will accommodate 5˚- 15˚ sharpening angles for ripping/milling chains. Please check back here as we will update this info when that becomes available.
